Chelsea are close to reaching a major transfer agreement for French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, sources say, as the London club look to strengthen their defence in the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old has emerged as Chelsea’s top target after talks with Rennes and the player’s representatives.
Personal terms agreed
According to reports, Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Jacquet, meaning the player and the club have settled on wages and a contract, and Jacquet is understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.
Talks between Chelsea and Rennes are continuing, but a full deal has not yet been completed.
The sticking point remains the transfer fee. Rennes are demanding a club-record sum of around €65 million (about £56 million), which would surpass their previous highest sale.
Chelsea reportedly don’t want to pay more than £50 million, and negotiations are ongoing as both clubs try to find common ground.
Is Jacquet worth the risk?
Jacquet has become one of Ligue 1’s most promising young defenders. The French Under-21 international has made over a dozen starts for Rennes this season and is noted for his defensive skills and comfort on the ball – attributes attracting interest from several top European clubs.
Despite Chelsea’s interest, Rennes are in no rush to sell in mid-season.
The French club view Jacquet as key to their own objectives, including a push for European qualification, and they may prefer to keep him until at least the summer unless Chelsea meet their valuation.
Rennes manager Habib Beye has publicly said Jacquet is vital to the team’s goals this season.
For Chelsea, the move is part of wider efforts to address defensive weaknesses. New head coach Liam Rosenior has recognised the need for reinforcements after injuries and inconsistent form in the centre-back positions.
Jacquet is seen as a long-term solution, though some fans and pundits debate whether his age and experience are enough to make an immediate impact.
If completed, the deal would mark one of Chelsea’s most significant signings of the season.
Both clubs have indicated optimism, but the final agreement hinges on reaching a transfer fee that satisfies Rennes.
