London City Lionesses have completed another major signing by bringing Spain international Mapi Leon to the Women’s Super League on a three-year contract.
The experienced defender arrives as a free agent following the expiry of her Barcelona contract, ending a trophy-laden nine-year spell with the Spanish giants.
Leon’s move comes just days after former Barcelona team-mate Alexia Putellas also joined London City, while England goalkeeper Mary Earps has already signed for Michele Kang’s ambitious club this summer.
‘The right time to move’
Leon has established herself as one of the world’s best defenders during her time at Barcelona.
The 31-year-old won 24 major trophies in her nine years at Barcelona. That includes, four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, seven Liga F crowns and several domestic cup competitions, helping Barcelona dominate both Spanish and European football.
She has also made more than 50 appearances for Spain during her international career.
Speaking after completing the move, Leon said, “I’m excited and happy to be here. It’s an interesting and attractive project. I have seen what is being built and what is taking shape.
“I played in Spain for many years and I felt now was the right time to move given the project. The English league is helping women’s football grow. I wanted to test myself in another country, another league, playing a different type of football.
“I think it is incredible what Michele conveys. She is an inspirational woman who wants women’s football to develop and thrive. Of course, I want to be part of something like this, a club which has been created for women.
“My team-mates will help me settle into the new environment and I hope my experience and leadership can help the team this season. I am looking forward to working with head coach Eder [Maestre], the staff and my new team-mates.
“My intention here is to reach the highest level as quickly as possible. Everything in a project goes in stages and requires hard work.
“I want to keep winning and still have the determination to be able to achieve this. Hopefully we can do this with London City Lionesses.”

London City continue statement summer
The signing is another clear statement of intent from London City Lionesses as they prepare for the new WSL season.
The club has already attracted several high-profile players, including Putellas and Earps, despite only recently establishing themselves in England’s top flight.
Kang has made no secret of her ambition to turn London City into one of Europe’s leading women’s clubs, with Leon becoming another world-class addition to the squad.
Leon will also reunite with two-time Ballon d’Or winner Putellas after the pair enjoyed years of success together at Barcelona.
Their partnership helped the Spanish side win four Champions League trophies, and London City will hope the duo can bring that winning mentality to England.
With Leon strengthening the defence and more arrivals expected before the transfer window closes, London City Lionesses are quickly building one of the most impressive squads in the Women’s Super League.
