The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has held talks with Pep Guardiola over becoming the country’s next head coach following Gennaro Gattuso’s departure.
According to Sky Sports, Paolo Maldini, who was recently appointed as the FIGC’s technical director, travelled to Barcelona alongside advisor Leonardo to present Guardiola with Italy’s long-term project.
The pair reportedly spent three days with the former Manchester City boss as the federation attempts to convince him to take charge of the Azzurri.
Italy are searching for a new manager after failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup, prompting a major overhaul within the federation.
Guardiola is considered the dream appointment, although it remains unclear whether he is prepared to end the break from football he announced after leaving Manchester City earlier this summer.
Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo are also understood to be under consideration.
Mendieta doubts Italy move
Former Spain and Barcelona midfielder Gaizka Mendieta, however, does not believe Italy will be Guardiola’s next destination.
Speaking to BetVictor, he said: “I don’t really see Pep Guardiola managing Spain. I could see him with England or Brazil.
“There was talk about Italy, but I don’t see that happening because of how their football is structured.”
Mendieta also played down suggestions Guardiola could return to Barcelona.
“I don’t think Pep wants to return to the old rivalries and confrontations with Jose Mourinho. I also don’t see him returning to coach Barcelona. If he does go back, it would be in a different capacity.
“Mourinho certainly won’t be the reason for him to return as a manager.”

What should Pep win next?
Instead, the former midfielder believes international football remains the most likely route if Guardiola decides to return to management.
“Pep is at a stage in his life where he doesn’t want to deal with the administrative work of a federation. He wants to win trophies like the World Cup or the Euros. That doesn’t leave many options.”
He added: “There aren’t many national teams he would consider. If he doesn’t stay in club football, perhaps Germany could be an option, but people only think of him in terms of winning the next World Cup.”
For now, Italy’s pursuit continues, with Guardiola yet to indicate whether he is ready to return to the dugout after ending his decade-long spell at Manchester City.
