Chelsea news: Huge Alejandro Garnacho update as Chelsea favourites to sign Man Utd star

According to reports, Chelsea are set to secure Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho in the coming days.

Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Nicole Powell reports on how the deal has evolved thus far and explores the feelings surrounding this potential move.

Price drops and a made-up mind

One of the biggest stories of the January transfer window so far has been that of Garnacho’s potential Old Trafford exit.

With Manchester United open to selling the Argentine, Chelsea aren’t the only ones vying for Garnacho.

The 20-year-old has had both Chelsea and Italian club Napoli fighting for his signature.

Chelsea are reportedly looking to strengthen their left wing, and are ready to put money where their mouth is.

United’s asking price of £70million has allegedly dropped to £55million according to Sky Italia.

Despite efforts from both Chelsea and Napoli, it is being reported that the Argentina international has already made up his mind on what club he’d like to play for.

Garnacho is allegedly more inclined to stay in the Premier League, making United’s closer rivals, Chelsea, the more likely final destination.

The silver lining

While the move has been deemed unpopular across the Chelsea fanbase, looking at past transfer targets may bring some calm to the minds of those in doubt.

Not many believed Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho - from either side of Manchester - would be as fruitful as they have become for the Blues.

Although Palmer and Sancho showed more promising heights before joining the London club than Garnacho has so far, it isn't unusual for a footballer to rediscover himself and enter untapped potential when they move to other clubs.

Not to mention, Garnacho had a stellar performance in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night during United’s 2-1 win over Rangers.

Whilst the winger has struggled for minutes under Ruben Amorim, his Thursday night performance was a statement not just to Manchester United and the clubs interested in him, but to those in doubt of the impact he can have on any side.
