Leeds Utd news: Daniel Farke to explore deal for Real Salt Lake forward Diego Luna

Leeds United made it seven successive league victories at home with a 2-0 victory over Derby County at the weekend.

Daniel Farke’s men soared to the top of the Championship table before Sheffield United’s draw against West Brom dropped them back down to second.

Leeds’ goals came from defenders Joe Rodon and Max Wober - so all the more reason for Farke to bolster his attacking options in the upcoming January transfer window.

Diego Luna is on the Whites’ radar, according to The Mirror, and Transfer News Blitz’s writer Harry Whitfield delves into the latest reports linking the American forward to the club.

MLS youngster attracting interest from Leeds

Diego Luna is an American attacking midfielder/winger for MLS side Real Salt Lake, having joined the club from Real Monarchs - a team in the American third division.

Luna, born in California, has played 31 times this season for RSL, scoring eight times and providing eight assists on his way to claiming the 2024 MLS Young Player of the Year award.

Ryan Taylor of The Mirror said on a social media post via X: “Leeds United have explored the conditions of a potential move for Real Salt Lake attacker Diego Luna, recently named MLS Young Player of the Season.

“Nothing to suggest any deal is imminent, but interest is there. Also, competition from Europe.”

Nicknamed ‘Moon Boy’, clubs from Belgium, Italy, Holland and Spain have taken interest in Luna since his starring role for RSL this season.

The 49ers keen to add another American signing

In recent years, Leeds has signed a fair few American players, such as Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Brenden Aaronson.

They even had a manager from the United States, Jesse Marsch, but we all know how that ended.

In fact, only Aaronson remains at the club, so maybe the 49ers are just looking to bring in more representatives of their nation.

However, Luna could be, for all we know, a superb addition to the Whites’ attack, but I would be lying if I said I knew if he was any good or not.

The 21-year-old did make his first appearance for the USA national team back at the start of the year.

But making the step up from the US to Europe is not as easy as making your debut for the American national team.

I, for one, hope he bags tons of goals if he does end up signing for Leeds in the near future.
