Man City news: Pep Guardiola ready to bring Bundesliga star Florian Wirtz to the Etihad Stadium
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz but faces competition from Bayern Munich.
According to SPORT BILD, Guardiola sees Wirtz as the replacement for Kevin de Bruyne, whose contract expires this summer and has also struggled with injuries as of late.
Bayern Munich are also interested in signing the 21-year-old, with club president Uli Hoeneß confirming the Bavarian's interest, although he admitted a deal is unlikely.
He said: “We want to sign Florian Wirtz.
“There are three parties involved, he still has a long-term contract in Leverkusen.
“I see the chances at 10%.”
Wirtz set to sign a new deal – despite interest
Despite the interest, Wirtz is set to sign a new contract with Leverkusen until 2027.
SPORT BILD report that a release clause of €125million from summer 2026 will be included as part of Wirtz’s new contract.
This has reportedly not deterred Guardiola from signing the German international, who is still keen to push for the midfielder this summer as the Spaniard aims to pursue the best young talent to rebuild his Manchester City side for the long term.
Wirtz’s form under Xabi Alonso has certainly established himself as this, with 18 goals and 19 assists last year in what was an exceptional season for Die Werkself – winning a domestic double, including the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title and reaching the Europa League final.
On a personal level, Wirtz was named Bundesliga player of the year and was part of the team of the season for the 2023/24 campaign.

How would Wirtz fit in at Manchester City?
The German international is primarily a number 10, however, he can also play anywhere across the frontline if needs be.
Wirtz’s creative ability is a big factor as to why Europe’s elite are chasing his signature.
The midfielder is joint top for assists in the Bundesliga along with now Manchester City player Omar Marmoush – as well as having a league-high of 13 big chances created along with Bayern duo Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich.
Wirtz’s age is a significant factor in Man City’s interest as much as his quality, as Guardiola looks to rebuild an ageing midfield at the Etihad Stadium, with the likes of De Bruyne, Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva all being in the latter stages of their careers.
