Sunderland news: Leicester City recall Tom Cannon as Sheffield United battle Black Cats with huge bid

Stoke City forward Tom Cannon has returned to his parent club Leicester City amidst a potential move to fellow Championship side Sunderland.

The Premier League side has decided to cut his loan move short with the Tyne and Wear side expressing interest in the Republic of Ireland international.

After initial reports of a loan to buy a move, Regis Le Bris’ side is now believed to be discussing a permanent transfer for a reported fee of £13million, as per Alan Nixon via Patreon.

Cannon’s scoring capabilities

A statement on the Potters website read: “Tom Cannon has been recalled from his loan spell at Stoke City by parent club Leicester City.

“The Republic of Ireland international scored 11 times for the Potters in 25 appearances in all competitions after arriving on the final day of the summer transfer window.

“Tom has our thanks for his commitment to the Stoke City cause during his loan spell with the Club.”

Mackems are all too familiar with Cannon’s scoring capabilities.

The 22-year-old has scored twice against Sunderland this season, scoring a last-minute winner at the bet365 Stadium in a 1-0 victory for Stoke against the Black Cats.

He was also on the scoresheet in the club’s FA Cup victory over Sunderland last weekend.

Le Bris has already brought in Enzo Le Fee this month from Italian giants Roma, as Cannon looks set to be the latest addition to the squad in their bid for promotion.

Blades match Sunderland's offer

However, rival promotion candidates Sheffield United have also shown interest in the former Everton man, but their valuation of the player was initially lower than Sunderland’s offer.

Blades boss Chris Wilder has expressed his desire to add another striker to their attacking ranks with Tyrese Campbell sidelined with injury.

Kieffer Moore has also picked up injuries this season and missed Sheffield’s FA Cup encounter against his former club Cardiff City with illness.

But in Nixon’s latest update via Patreon, United have raised their offer to match the Black Cats' bid for Cannon.

Whilst Sunderland’s offer is £13million guaranteed with future transfer fees included, the Blades’ have offered £10million upfront and £3million in extras.

The Foxes are set to accept both offers according to Nixon, as Cannon will have the final say on his destination.

The Yorkshire side are believed to be offering a more lucrative contract than Sunderland to tempt the forward into moving to Bramall Lane.
