Wrexham news: Andre Gray rumours, Matty James contract extension and Will Boyle exit

Wrexham are on the lookout for a new striker, with manager Phil Parkinson targeting Plymouth Argyle forward Andre Gray

Residing in second place in the League One table, Wrexham are flying under Phil Parkinson in search of a third successive promotion this season.

The Red Dragons trail league leaders Wycombe Wanderers by four points, and their Hollywood arch-rivals Birmingham City are just a point behind them with two games in hand.

Wrexham’s priority for the January transfer window is to bring in another striker as their key man, Jack Marriott, is still sidelined until at least February with a broken fibula.

With a lot of transfer activity expected to take place at the SToK Cae Ras, Transfer News Blitz’s Harry Whitfield provides the latest updates surrounding the Welsh club.

Andre Gray is at the top of Wrexham’s striker candidates

Plymouth Argyle signed Andre Gray as a free agent back in October on a short-term deal until January.

Since then, the former Watford man has scored three goals in six games, including two against Watford in a 2-2 draw.

Entering into the final month of his short deal, Gray’s future is yet to be decided, with Wrexham looking to poach the 33-year-old.

Last summer, Wrexham snatched Dan Scarr from Argyle, and the club is looking to repeat history by luring Gray away to Wales.

Marriott and Steven Fletcher’s injury, Paul Mullin’s drop in form and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s contract expiring at the end of December mean Parkinson’s top target in January is a forward.

Ollie Palmer has led the line as of late, but Parkinson is determined to bring in another striker, and Gray will surely be number one on his Christmas wishlist.

Fans want extended deal for Matty James

Matty James joined Wrexham on a free transfer in October after midfielder George Evans suffered a long-term injury.

James got his first league start after suspension against Exeter City, as he helped guide his side towards a 3-0 victory.

After an impressive start, James was selected again in a 1-0 win against Lincoln City, as Parkinson labelled him ‘outstanding’ after the game.

Currently on a short-term deal until the end of December, fans took to social media to urge the club to extend his contract beyond the January transfer window.

The ex-Bristol City man has certainly made a great start to his stint with the Red Dragons, and his boss also talked about protecting his player after the Lincoln game due to his match sharpness.

Will Boyle tipped for a loan move?

A player that has not impressed the fans has been Will Boyle, who is yet to make a league appearance this season.

Boyle has featured as an unused substitute once and only made appearances in the EFL Cup and EFL Trophy.

The former Huddersfield Town defender joined the club back at the start of last season, making 24 league appearances in Wrexham’s promotion from League Two.

But now, Football League World fan pundit Liam Grice claimed there is too much competition at centre-back for Boyle to get any minutes.

He believed a loan move back to League Two would suit both parties before a likely departure in the summer.
