Premier League betting tips: Sunderland vs Newcastle – Betting tips & Banter Galore

Wear-Tyne derby betting tips

Sunderland host Newcastle this weekend as the Wear-Tyne derby returns to the Premier League, and once again, it promises all the drama that usually comes with it.

After the positive reception to his Wear-Tyne derby combined XI – Not so much from Tyneside, Transfer News Blitz writer Taylor Stephenson is back to offer up some betting insights ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Match outright

It genuinely surprises me that Newcastle enter this match as such heavy favourites—and that’s not meant as a dig.

Sunderland remain unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season, while Newcastle have found life away from St. James’ Park far more difficult.

That said, derbies are a different beast. They often feel like cup finals, and both sides know what’s at stake.

My prediction? A draw. Neither team will want to lose to their fiercest rivals, and I think the gap between them is much smaller than the odds suggest.

Suggested bet: Both teams to score &  match draw at 10/3 (Bet365)

Tough Tacklers

When Sunderland signed Granit Xhaka in the summer, many immediately anticipated fireworks between him and Joelinton in the derby.

While Xhaka is always a candidate for a booking, Trai Hume feels like the smarter pick. The fullback is a committed tackler who absolutely loves a crunching challenge—and a derby is the perfect stage for one.

Joelinton did pick up an injury in Newcastle’s match against Bayer Leverkusen, so if he doesn’t feature, the alternative pairing is his compatriot Bruno Guimarães, who is also no stranger to a firm tackle.

Suggested bet: Hume & Joelinton to be shown a card 13/2 (BetMGM)

Alternative bet: Hume & Bruno to be shown a card 7.77/1 (PaddyPower)

For the bettors who enjoy a longer shot – this one’s for you. And for any Newcastle fans reading, feel free to send the hate… I won’t lose sleep over it.

Double Chance: Home/Draw
Yes, I’ve said a draw feels likely, but that doesn’t make me infallible. Newcastle have a habit of conceding late, and Sunderland have a habit of grabbing late goals. Another Dan Ballard moment? Don’t rule it out.

Both Teams to Score
This feels close to a banker—unless Sunderland decide to repeat a certain 3–0 result…

Over 5.5 Total Cards
It’s the Wear–Tyne Derby. The tackles will be flying in, especially if the game stays tight. Nobody will be shying away from a 50–50.

Anytime Goalscorer: Wilson Isidor
After passing up two big chances in recent matches, Isidor will be desperate to put one away. He thrives on big occasions, and few stages are bigger than this.

That is, assuming he starts with Brian Brobbey pushing hard for a place in the XI.

Suggested bet: Double Chance: Home/Draw, both teams to score, over 5.5 cards, Wilson Isidor to score anytime. 21/2 (BetMGM)

Final message

Peace and love to all – wishing everyone a prosperous weekend… except the Mags, I hope your toast lands butter side up, your pints are flat, your Metro breaks down, and you get turned over convincingly.
