Liverpool transfer news: Adam Wharton deal off as Morgan Rogers rumours emerge

Liverpool are enduring a season to forget under Arne Slot, with the Reds currently sitting 14 points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Despite delivering a dream league title last campaign, frustration is growing among supporters. Many fans believe the club would be better served by moving on from the Dutchman, while others argue the responsibility lies squarely with an underperforming squad.

In an effort to halt the slide, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton had been linked with a long-term move to Anfield. However, attention has since shifted away from the England international and towards Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.

Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Joe Matthews explores the rumours on Merseyside and who, if anyone might end up at the Reds.

Wharton’s move crumbles

Reports previously suggested Wharton was close to agreeing a long-term deal with Liverpool, but those claims have since been dismissed online and described as “wide of the mark”.

It is understood that Liverpool’s recruitment priorities now lie elsewhere, both in terms of positional needs and transfer targets. Any move for the soon-to-be 22-year-old would also require a significant financial outlay, with Transfermarkt valuing the midfielder at over €60 million.

A swoop for Rogers

With the Wharton deal appearing increasingly unlikely, a new and exciting option has emerged in the form of Aston Villa’s creative attacking midfielder, Morgan Rogers, who could be available for a big-money move this summer.

Rogers has registered seven goals and five assists in 23 league appearances this season, catching the eye with his smooth dribbling, intelligent passing range, and composed finishing.

Slot’s side now find themselves down in sixth place after a damaging 3–2 defeat to an underperforming Bournemouth at the weekend, a result that saw Liverpool slip below both Manchester United and Chelsea.

As pressure continues to mount and speculation surrounding former Red and Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso intensifies, additions of the calibre of Rogers or Wharton could prove crucial in pulling Liverpool out of their current slump.
