Manchester United confirm Michael Carrick as head coach on new two-year deal

Manchester United confirm Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick will remain in charge at Manchester United after the club confirmed the former midfielder has signed a new two-year contract to continue as head coach at Old Trafford.

The deal keeps him at the club until 2028 and marks a major vote of confidence after his impressive spell in charge.

Carrick initially returned to United in January on an interim basis following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

Since then, he has overseen a dramatic turnaround in fortunes and helped restore optimism around the club.

His strong results and growing support from both players and supporters made him the leading candidate to take the role permanently.

Reward for impressive turnaround

United’s hierarchy were reportedly convinced by Carrick’s impact both on and off the pitch.

Carrick guided the club through a difficult period and quickly improved performances after taking over, with victories against the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Chelsea and secured a return to next season’s Champions League.

He won 11 of his first 16 matches in charge, losing only two, and helped create a more positive atmosphere around the squad.

The 44-year-old is no stranger to Old Trafford. As a player, he spent more than a decade at Manchester United, winning multiple major honours including Premier League titles and the Champions League.

He later returned as part of the coaching staff before taking previous caretaker duties.

Carrick looking ahead

After putting pen to paper, Carrick spoke of his pride at leading the club and his determination to bring success back to Old Trafford.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” Carrick said in a club statement.

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”

He now faces the challenge of building on the progress made during his first few months in charge.

The decision signals the beginning of a new chapter for Manchester United, with the club hoping one of its former players can guide them back among English and European football’s elite.
