When international tournaments are played in the summer, it can become a scouting opportunity for top clubs to see which players play best under the pressure of major competition.
Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Tom Down looks at how football players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup perform when rumours of a transfer are circulating.
Perfect timing
The 2026 summer transfer window for English and Scottish clubs opened on June 15.
With the FIFA World Cup starting on June 11, it makes a lot of sense that clubs will be watching over the matches, looking at key players that they may want to recruit for the 2026/27 season.
The final of the tournament is set to be played on July 19, which will give clubs until September 1 to decide who they want to go for.
Clubs may find this really convenient, as the level they see from players in the World Cup will likely continue into next season, with less than two months between them.

How it affects players
Julian Alvarez
Some players may shine under the lights, knowing that big clubs are interested in them, whereas others may struggle to prove themselves worthy of a big transfer that they’ve been rumoured to make.
Perhaps the biggest transfer story at the moment is Julian Alvarez, who has publicly stated his desire to change clubs and “fulfil his dream,” which is believed to be a move to Barcelona.
Atletico has publicly hit out at both Real Madrid and Barcelona regarding offers made for Alvarez.
The Argentine has only featured in two of the three group stage games, with a 6.3 match rating against Algeria and 6.5 against Austria on Sofascore, with no goal involvements in either game.
This could suggest the transfer saga is getting to him and causing fewer contributions than what is expected of the former Man City player.
However, the lack of involvement could be credited to Lionel Messi’s top performances during the group stages.
Yan Diamonde
On the other hand, Yan Diomande is a young star representing the Ivory Coast at the World Cup and is performing well, whilst speculation of a big move to Liverpool swirls.
His first game of the group stages only saw a 6.4 rating on Sofascore, but the two games that followed gave him a rating of 8.2 against Ecuador and 7.2 against Germany.
The 19-year-old has been valued at over £100 million by his current club, RB Leipzig, who rejected Liverpool’s opening bid of around £87 million.
Liverpool are said to still be in pursuit of the young winger.
Diomande became one of the most promising young talents in world football, picking up 21 goal contributions over the last season.
This shows a contrast in performance from two players who have both attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs.
But there are clear differences in the fact that Alvarez’s situation seems very messy compared to Diomande, who just has a high price tag.
As the tournament progresses, we may see more of how these two, as well as other rumoured players, compete with teams wanting to sign them.
