Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has told the club he wants to join Arsenal following Brazil’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The midfielder has informed Newcastle of his desire to leave St James’ Park this summer, although Arsenal are yet to make official contact with the Magpies over a potential transfer.
It is understood that the framework of a possible deal has been explored through intermediaries.
Guimaraes has been one of Newcastle’s most important players since joining from Lyon in January 2022.
The 28-year-old was appointed club captain and has become a fan favourite thanks to his performances in midfield.
However, the Brazilian now appears ready for a new challenge after his country’s World Cup campaign came to an end.
Arsenal monitoring the situation
Arsenal have admired Guimaraes for some time and could now step up their interest after learning of the player’s intentions.
The Premier League champions are looking to strengthen their midfield this summer and see the Newcastle captain as an ideal addition.
The Gunners are believed to be considering an offer worth around £60 million, although negotiations have not yet begun between the two clubs.
While Arsenal are keen, Newcastle are under no pressure to sell one of their biggest stars.
Guimaraes still has two years remaining on his current contract, with the club also holding the option to extend the deal by a further year.
Newcastle have not commented publicly on the reports and continue to value the midfielder highly.

Newcastle face another difficult decision
Losing Guimaraes would be another significant blow for Newcastle during what has already been a busy summer.
The club have been linked with several midfield targets as they prepare for the possibility of further departures, but replacing their captain would be a major challenge.
Guimaraes has been central to Eddie Howe’s side both on and off the pitch, combining leadership with consistent performances in midfield.
Whether Arsenal submit a formal bid remains to be seen, but Guimaraes’ decision to tell Newcastle he wants the move has increased the likelihood of one of the biggest Premier League transfers of the summer.
For now, Newcastle remain determined to keep hold of their captain, while Arsenal weigh up their next move as they look to strengthen a title-winning squad.
