Ethan Nwaneri’s search for regular first-team football has taken a new turn, with Borussia Dortmund agreeing a season-long loan deal for the Arsenal academy graduate.
The 19-year-old forward heads to Germany after Dortmund lost new signing Giannis Konstantelias to a significant knee injury sustained during their 2-0 win over Hamburg on Saturday, August 29.
Dortmund had already tried to sign Nwaneri last summer, and their interest never fully went away.

Arsenal prioritise development over minutes
For Arsenal, the priority this window has been clear: they do not want to sell the teenager and have preferred loan options that guarantee him meaningful minutes.
Manager Mikel Arteta currently has an abundance of attacking talent at his disposal. That depth would almost certainly have limited Nwaneri’s opportunities at the Emirates this season.
There is a strong feeling at the club that a year of consistent game time elsewhere will benefit his development far more than another campaign spent largely on the fringes.
Interest in the England youth international has been widespread throughout the summer, with clubs from the Premier League and across Europe monitoring the situation. Arsenal’s stance, however, has remained consistent.

Injury forces Dortmund’s hand
Any departure had to be temporary, and Dortmund’s need following the Konstantelias injury aligned with what the Gunners were looking for.
Nwaneri spent the second half of last season on loan at Marseille, gaining valuable experience in Ligue 1.
That spell is seen as a useful stepping stone, and a full campaign in the Bundesliga under a club of Dortmund’s stature is viewed as the next logical step.
In a separate piece of Arsenal business, midfielder Fabio Vieira has completed a permanent move to Hamburg after spending last season on loan with the same club.
The 26-year-old joined Arsenal from Porto in 2022 for £34.2 million and made 49 appearances during his time in north London.
For Nwaneri, the focus now shifts to completing the formalities in Germany.
If everything proceeds as planned, he will be a Borussia Dortmund player for the 2026/27 season, reuniting with a club that has long admired his potential while remaining an Arsenal player for the long term.
