One of the biggest transfer stories of the 2026 summer window has finally reached its conclusion, with Julian Alvarez deciding to remain at Atletico Madrid.
The Argentina international made clear his desire to leave the club earlier this summer, publicly stating that a transfer was “the best option” and that he wanted to “fulfil my dream.”
That dream destination was widely understood to be Barcelona. Over the following weeks, he was heavily linked with moves to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal.
Atletico hold firm against Barcelona and Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s interest was shut down quickly. The club publicly confirmed a €150 million offer in June, only for Atletico to reject it and point to Alvarez’s €500 million release clause.
Atletico’s hierarchy, particularly president Enrique Cerezo and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marín, took an even harder line with Barcelona.
They repeatedly stated there was “zero per cent chance” of selling the striker to their La Liga rivals, framing the issue as one of principle and dignity rather than money.
Arsenal emerged as the most realistic alternative. The Premier League champions held talks with Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany and were prepared to meet a valuation in the region of €150 million.
There were even suggestions that a deal could include a future clause allowing Alvarez to move to Barcelona at a later date.
However, the forward’s preference remained firmly with the Catalan club. With that door firmly closed by Atletico, Alvarez ultimately rejected a return to English football.

The final decision
As the deadline nears, reports have now confirmed that Alvarez had informed Atletico’s hierarchy of his decision to stay, at least until the next transfer window.
He has since been spotted back in training with the squad and is not expected to make any late move before the deadline.
The 26-year-old, who joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 on a contract running until 2030, has been a key figure under Diego Simeone.
While the past few months have been tense – including periods of absence from training and a frosty relationship with sections of the fanbase – both player and club now appear ready to move forward together.
What began as one of the most bitter and high-profile transfer sagas of the summer has ended with Alvarez remaining an Atletico Madrid player.
