Chelsea have confirmed the departure of Marc Cucurella after the Spanish defender completed a permanent move to Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old has signed a six-year contract with the Spanish giants, bringing an end to his four-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
Reports suggest the deal is worth up to £51.8 million, with an initial fee of around £47.5 million and a further £4.3 million in potential add-ons.
Real Madrid announced Cucurella as their first signing since the return of José Mourinho, with the club looking to strengthen its defensive options ahead of the new season.
The left-back will remain under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 2032.
End of a memorable Chelsea spell
Chelsea paid up to £63 million to sign Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022, making him one of the club’s most expensive defensive signings.
His time in west London was mixed initially, with the Spaniard facing criticism during his first season. However, he gradually established himself as one of Chelsea’s most reliable performers.
During his four years at the club, Cucurella made 163 appearances in all competitions and helped Chelsea win the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He also became a popular figure among supporters thanks to his energetic displays and commitment on the pitch.
In a statement confirming his departure, the club said, “Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in our recent achievements.
“We wish him every success as he begins the next stage of his career.”

Real Madrid begin rebuilding under Mourinho
Cucurella’s arrival comes as Real Madrid begin a new era under Mourinho following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.
Los Blancos failed to win La Liga and were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals, prompting the club to target reinforcements this summer.
The Spain international is expected to provide competition and experience at left-back, while also adding versatility due to his ability to operate as a wing-back and wide midfielder.
Mourinho reportedly viewed Cucurella as a key target and pushed for the transfer to be completed quickly.
Focus shifts to the World Cup
Cucurella is currently part of Spain‘s squad at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and is expected to join his new team-mates after the tournament concludes.
Having already won Euro 2024 with Spain, the defender will now return to La Liga for the first time since leaving Getafe in 2021.
For Chelsea, his departure represents the loss of one of their most experienced defenders, while Real Madrid will hope the Spaniard can help strengthen a back line in need of fresh leadership and quality.
