Burnley news: Morgan Whittaker latest as Clarets chase Plymouth Argyle forward, Jonjo Shelvey also linked

Plymouth Argyle defeated Premier League side Brentford in the FA Cup at the weekend, thanks to a late winner from Morgan Whittaker at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Before the game, Whittaker was the subject of transfer interest from fellow Championship side Burnley.

Fabrizio Romano reported via X that the Clarets had reignited their summer interest in the forward.

Clarets bid rejected by Pilgrims

Starting his career at Derby County, Whittaker has since made his mark at Argyle, joining the club permanently back in 2023 following an initial loan move.

The 24-year-old has made over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Pilgrims, scoring 33 goals and assisting 16 times.

It is no wonder then that Clarets boss Scott Parker wants to secure the signature of Whittaker to strengthen their promotion bid.

Sky Sports News reported that a bid had been submitted by the Lancashire club.

However, Burnley’s bid was soon rejected by Arygle according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.

Hull City had also made a move for Whittaker but their offer was turned down by the Greens.

Ex-Newcastle midfielder set for return to English football

One player who could be set to join Parker’s side this month is former Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Shelvey joined Turkish Süper Lig club Eyüpspor back in August but was released by the club in the first week of January 2025.

Since then, the 32-year-old has been training with the Championship side as he looks to earn himself a spot in Parker’s squad.

The 44-year-old head coach has already lost one option in midfield after Han-Noah Massengo’s loan move to Auxerre.

Put to him if Shelvey could replace Massengo’s place in the first-team, he told the Burnley Express: “It's a possibility, yeah, we'll see where we go.

“Maybe a little bit of training time and see what happens, but it’s certainly an area which we need to look at.

“But it's still very early stages.”
