Leeds Utd news: Daniel Farke targeting Cameron Archer ahead of potential Premier League return

After a 3-1 comeback victory over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, Leeds United looks set for promotion back to the Premier League.

Goals from Junior Firpo, Ao Tanaka and Joel Piroe secured a late turnaround after Illan Meslier’s own goal for the Whites in the first half.

The victory put Leeds five points clear of Blades and their gap to third-place promotion rivals Burnley to seven.

Daniel Farke opted against making any additions in the January transfer window, and it seems it was the right decision as Leeds’ attack continues to fire them towards promotion.

Leeds to rekindle interest in Cameron Archer

One of the options explored by the club, before deadline day earlier this month, was Southampton forward Cameron Archer.

The 23-year-old joined the Saints last summer after their promotion from the Championship.

Since then, Archer has made 29 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring five goals since his £15million move to the South Coast.

A useful first-team squad member, Southampton were reluctant to let go of Archer as they now face relegation back to the second tier of English football.

Ben Jacobs: Saints striker on Whites’ ‘shortlist’

However, speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, Ben Jacobs claimed Leeds would reignite their interest in the English striker ahead of a potential return to the Premier League.

“Cameron Archer was Leeds’ number one target as far as the striker was concerned, and it was no failing on the part of Leeds,” he said.

“It was just down to the fact that Southampton were reluctant to sell, and Leeds tried until the end, but Southampton's position didn't change.

“So my expectation is, with Southampton likely to go down and Leeds on track to come up, that Leeds will revisit the Cameron Archer deal, and over the course of a long summer, potentially make more progress there.

“Archer is keen on the move.

“Leeds value the fact that he can play centrally or out wide, and Archer will remain on Leeds’ shortlist heading into the summer.”

The Whites face West Bromwich Albion this Saturday, with 12 games left of the 2024/25 league campaign.
