Man Utd news: Red Devils to rival Chelsea for Champions League defender

Manchester United and Chelsea both interested in Champions League defender

Ruben Amorim’s Portuguese revolution at Manchester United is well underway, with the 39-year-old recording his first win as United boss against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday.

With the January transfer window growing closer, incomings and outgoings will be at the front of Amorim’s mind.

It appears as though the new Man Urd manager first wants to address his defence, with several big names linked to Old Trafford.

After spending almost four years in charge of Portuguese side Sporting, it would be no surprise if Amorim called upon his Primeira Liga expertise in January.

United are reportedly interested in Benfica central defender Tomás Araújo, according to the Sun, who has been a consistent figure in the club’s backline this season.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign, having featured in four of Benfica’s five Champions League matches.

The Portuguese defender is strong in the air and on the ball, winning 2.87 aerial duels per 90 minutes whilst maintaining an 88% passing accuracy in the Primera Liga so far this year.

Premier League rivals ready to go toe-to-toe

West London outfit Chelsea are also in the market for a defender this January, and alongside Man Utd also have the Portugal international on their radar.

It is unknown if Araújo has a preferred destination in mind – if any – however, Amorim’s Portuguese ties could help convince him to move to Manchester.

Benfica may be reluctant to let one of their top talents and regular starters leave the club in January but could be tempted with a suitable offer.
