Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim targeting moves for Jean-Philipe Mateta and Jonathan David

Manchester United are preparing for a huge summer transfer window, as Ruben Amorim prepares for his first full season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are set to record their lowest league finish since 1974, when the club were relegated from the First Division under Tommy Docherty, finishing 21st.

With United having seemingly written off their current campaign, attention has shifted to next season, with the Mancunians reportedly monitoring several players ahead of potential summer moves.

Jonathan David keen on Premier League move

In what could become one of the bargains of the summer, Jonathan David is yet to sign a new deal at LOSC Lille.

The Canadian forward’s contract with the Ligue 1 side expires in June.

As one of the hottest attackers in Europe, the 25-year-old has registered 22 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season and could be available on a free transfer in the summer.

With speculation around David’s future building, Caught Offside have reported that the Canada international is keen on a move to England.

Man United are huge admirers of the centre-forward, but face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Newcastle United, who are also interested.

Manchester United keeping tabs on Jean-Philipe Mateta

Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund have scored just five Premier League goals between them this season, so it is no surprise to see the Red Devils interested in a striker.

According to The Sun, United are actively monitoring Crystal Palace frontman Jean-Philipe Mateta.

The Frenchman has bagged 15 goals in all competitions this season - an output which could be greatly amplified in a better side.

The 27-year-old would not necessarily break the bank for the Manchester club either, with the Eagles reportedly having quoted United just £40million, as per The Mirror.

Oliver Glasner has got the best out of Mateta since taking over at Selhurst Park in February 2025, but it is unclear whether the forward could reproduce the same magic elsewhere.

Manchester United need a rebuild

Marcus Rashford and Anthony left Old Trafford on loan in January as Manchester United made a clear shift in their transfer strategy.

Chairman of the INEOS Group, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, took charge of sporting operations last February, and the 72-year-old has not held back regarding the state of the Red Devils’ squad.

Speaking to the media, he said: “Some players are not good enough, and some probably are overpaid.

“For us to mold the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.

“You are beginning to see a glimpse of what Amorim can produce. I think you saw a glimpse of it against Arsenal,” he continued.

“How many players against Arsenal on the bench did you recognise? Ruben [Amorim] is doing a super job.”

It is clear to see that Ratcliffe is not happy with the quality of United’s squad and the club’s inflated spending, but despite this did confirm that Amorim will have a transfer budget in the summer.
