MLS news: Former Barcelona and PSG star Neymar in talks for move to MLS from Al-Hilal
Al-Hilal and Brazil megastar Neymar has entered preliminary talks with three Major League Soccer clubs.
The 32-year-old has endured a tough time in Saudi Arabia after leaving French outfit Paris Saint-Germain for €90million in 2023.
Transfer News Blitz Content Editor Edward Moss has the latest on Neymar’s future.
Injury struggles
Neymar has struggled for fitness over the last 18 months, after suffering an ACL tear in October 2023, whilst on international duty with Brazil.
That injury kept the forward out for almost a year, with the Brazilian missing 48 games for his new club.
Since joining reigning Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal two years ago, Neymar has made just seven appearances - not exactly the return they expected after breaking the bank to secure the winger’s signature.
The ex-Barcelona and PSG talisman picked up a hamstring injury just two games into his recent return in November 2024, which has kept the winger out of action ever since.
Interest from the MLS
The MLS has become home to some of football’s household names, including Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Lorenzo Insigne, and Christian Benteke, who are currently plying their trade in the United States.
Three American clubs are reportedly keen to bring Neymar to the MLS when the Brazil international’s contract with Al-Hilal expires in the summer, as per ESPN.
Chicago Fire FC are the only club that has been named out of the three interested sides, however, Inter Miami are confirmed to not be among the teams looking to sign Neymar.
Former Barcelona player and current Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano ruled out a move for his former teammate.
He said: “Obviously, Ney is a great player. Every coach in the world wants him.
“You know the MLS rules around the salary cap, so for us in this moment, it’s impossible to try to think about him.
Sorry, Barcelona and MLS fans, but it seems as though there will not be a reunion for the iconic ‘MSN’ [Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar] trio any time soon.
