MLS news: Lionel Messi reunion off as Santos leads the race to sign Neymar

Brazilian club Santos have emerged as the favourite to resign Neymar.

The 32-year-old started his career at the club, coming through the youth ranks before bursting onto the scene in 2009.

LaLiga titans Barcelona came calling four years later, and the rest they say, is history.

MLS interest

Three Major League Soccer clubs were reported to have been in preliminary talks with the legendary Brazilian, with Chicago Fire FC the only side named.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez’s Inter Miami were ruled out as a potential destination for Neymar due to salary cap rules in the MLS.

The all-time top goalscorer for Brazil played with Messi at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain and was rumoured to only consider a move to the United States if it was to link back up with the Argentine.

Back to where it all began

Neymar was hot property when he broke into the first team at Santos 16 years ago.

The forward went on to make 225 appearances in all competitions for the Brazilian giants, scoring 136 goals along the way.

In his four-year stint with the club, Neymar won the Recopa Sudamericana, the Brazilian Cup, and the Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent to the Champions League.

As reported by Sky Sports Germany, Santos are in talks with Neymar to bring the Brazil international back to his boyhood club.

Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal would allow the attacker to leave the club immediately if an agreement is reached.
