Newcastle Utd news: Four alternative options to improve Eddie Howe’s squad ahead of 2025/26 Premier League season
With Newcastle United looking to add a mixture of quality and depth to their squad in the summer transfer window, the Magpies will have to use their transfer kitty wisely.
Eddie Howe’s side have once again struggled with their squad depth this season, never really having a full squad available to choose from.
The Magpies also need to add immediate quality to the starting lineup, with at least a new starting right winger, central defender and goalkeeper seen as essential by most of the Newcastle fanbase.
Transfer News Blitz’s writer, Dylan Richardson, looks at some alternative options that the Newcastle recruitment team could look at to put the squad in a stronger place next season.
Maghnes Akliouche, AS Monaco
The 23-year-old winger has scored three goals and registered six assists in Ligue 1 so far this season, also adding two goals and two assists to his tally in the Champions League.
The Magpies need a winger on the right-hand side to feed off the creativity of Anthony Gordon and help Alexander Isak score even more goals next year.
The left-footed winger could be a perfect candidate, making 6.1 progressive passes per 90 minutes, ranking in the top nine percent in Europe in this metric.
With 5.29 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, the Monaco forward would also be capable of helping out defensively, an attribute that Howe looks for in a winger.
Alexsandro Ribeiro, LOSC Lille
The Magpies are desperate for a central defender with a bit of pace and defensive solidity, with Fabian Schar continuing to decline physically and Dan Burn also getting no younger.
Ideally, Newcastle would want a long-term partner for Sven Botman in the heart of defense, so why not sign him from the same place?
At six-foot-two-inches tall, the 25-year-old Brazilian wins 76% of his aerial duels, while Schar has only won 41% this season.
Alexsandro is also a great passer of the ball, completing 64.25 passes per game, more than the 33-year-old Swiss international at 48.5.
Elia Caprile, Cagliari Calcio
It is well documented that Newcastle’s number one target in goal this summer is James Trafford of Burnley, but if the Clarets get promoted and the 22-year-old is priced out of a summer transfer, a move for Elia Caprile, who is currently on loan at Cagliari from Napoli, could make sense.
Despite playing only 12 matches in the Serie A this season, the 23-year-old has already established himself as one of the best shot stoppers in Europe, with a save percentage of 79.4%, putting him on par with Alisson of Liverpool.
The goalkeeper also has a great command of his area, claiming 8.6% of crosses that come his way. In comparison, current number one Martin Dubravka stops just 7.4% of crosses.
Sindre Walle Egeli, FC Nordsjælland
The 18-year-old would not come in and be an immediate starter for the Magpies, but he could provide some quality squad depth and be a good option off the bench for Howe.
Predominantly a right winger, the Norwegian international can also play as a striker and has registered five goals and three assists in 1432 minutes this season, averaging a goal every 286 minutes in the Danish Superliga.
