Chelsea are set to complete the signing of Valentin Barco from Strasbourg. The Argentine midfielder is expected to become one of Liam Rosenior’s first major additions at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old has agreed a long-term deal, with reports indicating a contract of up to six years, as Chelsea continue to invest in young talent under their current project.
Barco, who previously played in the Premier League with Brighton, has impressed during his time in France.
After joining Strasbourg permanently in 2025, he went on to make 38 appearances under Rosenior, playing a key role in midfield.
Only two players have created more big chances than Barco in Ligue 1 this season.
Chelsea move quickly to secure Barco
Chelsea’s interest in Barco has developed rapidly in recent weeks, with the club moving ahead of other European sides to secure his signature.
Bayern Munich were among the teams linked with the midfielder. However, Chelsea’s position within the BlueCo ownership structure has helped facilitate the deal.
Strasbourg and Chelsea share the same ownership group, allowing for a smoother negotiation process.
The move is expected to be finalised in the summer, with Barco joining ahead of the 2026/27 season.
While some reports suggest the agreement is already in place, others indicate that talks progressed quickly after initial interest, with Barco open to the move and keen to take the next step in his career.

Rosenior reunion a key factor
A major factor behind the transfer is Barco’s existing relationship with Rosenior. The Chelsea head coach worked closely with the midfielder at Strasbourg and played a key role in his development.
Barco’s versatility has been a standout feature, having evolved from a left-back into a central midfielder.
His ability to contribute both defensively and in possession has made him an attractive option for Chelsea as they look to reshape their squad.
Rosenior is believed to see Barco as a player who can fit seamlessly into his system, particularly given his familiarity with the manager’s tactical approach.
Is this the right move?
Under the BlueCo ownership, a good number of players have moved between the two clubs.
However, there has yet to be a move from Strasbourg to Chelsea that has strengthened the London side.
Is Chelsea taking another low-reward risk by bringing Barco from Strasbourg, or will he prove to be a much-needed signing?
