Tottenham are reportedly preparing for a future without Guglielmo Vicario ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

They signed the Italian goalkeeper from Empoli in 2023 following an impressive campaign in Serie A.

Spurs currently sit just 16th in the Premier League, and have conceded 41 goals this season.

Vicario is being linked with a move away from north London, and the club are rumoured to have whittled down a shortlist of potential replacements.

WHY SPURS WANT TO CASH IN

Ever since his £17.2m move almost three years ago, things have been up and down for Vicario.

On one hand, huge saves at clutch moments to stop things going from bad to worse for Spurs.

On the other hand, rash decision-making and a lack of presence between the sticks have caused some fans to grow frustrated with his performances.

Across his 89 Premier League matches, Vicario has kept 18 clean sheets.

Of course, clean sheets are not solely down to the goalkeeper.

The whole defence, and in fact the hard work of the entire team, has a huge say on the number of goals conceded.

Spurs have been dealt blow after blow on the injury front, particularly in defence – and it was a similar story last season.

Only Vicario himself can be blamed for his individual errors, though.

Two errors leading to goals in the league so far this season, plus another error leading directly to a shot, have not helped Spurs’ survival fight.

WHO COULD REPLACE VICARIO BETWEEN THE STICKS?

There are a number of potential options that Spurs could look at in terms of replacing Vicario.

One of which, and reportedly top of the list, is RC Lens’ Robin Risser.

The 21-year-old has made a name for himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe this season.

Risser has kept 10 clean sheets in 25 matches across all competitions so far this year.

Lens have shocked Ligue 1 this year  and are currently 2nd in the table, just two points behind Paris Saint-Germain at the top.

Risser currently has a market value of around £8m.

Other options include Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, Sunderland’s Robin Roefs, and Manchester City outcast James Trafford.

Verbruggen, whilst a top keeper, would be a rather expensive option.

Last summer it was revealed that the Brighton number one was the most valuable goalkeeper in the world at £54m.

Roefs has seriously impressed during Sunderland’s top season so far.

Having only joined the club last summer, though, the Black Cats may be reluctant to sell so soon.

As for Trafford, he joined Man City with the expectation of at least pushing for that number one spot.

Guardiola went on to make the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma later that summer too, leaving Trafford on the sidelines.

It is expected that Trafford will be scratching at the doors for first-team football this summer, and an Etihad exit is highly likely.
