Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo joins Man City in £64m deal

Only nine days into the January transfer window, and we’ve already been handed what could prove to be the biggest story of the month.

Manchester City have completed the signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in a deal worth £64m.

The forward has agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League giants, with an official announcement expected on Friday, January 9.

Bournemouth confirmed that the guaranteed element of Semenyo’s release clause stood at £60m, but the Cherries will receive a slightly higher total fee of £62.5m, paid in instalments over a 24-month period, with additional performance-related add-ons taking the overall package to £64m.

City win the race

Semenyo had been one of the most in-demand players in the league this season, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham all monitoring his situation closely.

However, City moved decisively to fend off competition, identifying the 25-year-old as a key addition to their evolving frontline.

The Ghana international leaves Bournemouth after a standout spell on the south coast, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dynamic forwards.

In fitting fashion, Semenyo closed the chapter on his Bournemouth career with a moment supporters will not forget.

He scored a dramatic last-minute winner against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, January 7 – just a day before undergoing his medical in Manchester.

You win some, you lose some

For Manchester City, the signing represents both an immediate boost and a long-term investment.

Guardiola has often spoken about the need for adaptable attackers capable of pressing aggressively and contributing defensively, areas in which Semenyo excels.

As they chase Arsenal in the title race, Semenyo may add a much-needed spark to City’s charge.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, will be disappointed to lose one of their brightest stars mid-season, but the financial return is significant.

The fee received provides the club with flexibility to reinvest in January and the summer, as they look to climb the Premier League table, and continue building under their current project.

As the January window unfolds, Semenyo’s move to Manchester City has already set the benchmark – and it may take something truly extraordinary to eclipse it.
