Liverpool transfer news: Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet close to Anfield switch

Liverpool look set to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet.

The 20-year-old looks likely to join the club in the summer for a reported £60m fee.

Jacquet is widely regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in the world, and would be a huge coup for Liverpool.

Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Emily Clogg discusses the potential move and why Jacquet is a perfect fit for Arne Slot.

JEREMY JACQUET’S BIG FEE

£60m is a very big fee for a player of any age and status, let alone a 2o-year-old – but Liverpool feel as though he will be worth every penny.

Jacquet has been likened to Arsenal star William Saliba, which is high praise indeed.

He’d be making a similar switch to Saliba – joining a Premier League giant at a young age from Ligue 1 – but the comparisons go further than the style of transfer.

They also share similar styles of play.

Jacquet is smooth and comfortable on the ball, excellent in the recovery, and an aerial monster.

Standing at 6’3″ tall, he has completed 71% of his aerial duels in the league so far this season.

Jacquet had been heavily linked to a move to Chelsea earlier in the window, but it seems like it’s Arne Slot’s Liverpool who will snatch up his services ahead of next season.

HOW HE FITS IN AT ANFIELD

Jacquet is not only a young talent but a ready-made leader.

He has already captained France at U16, U18, U19 and U20 levels.

This could make him a perfect natural replacement for current Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk in the years to come.

Jacquet would be joining Giovanni Leoni as a hot prospect in the centre-back position at Anfield.

Leoni, 19, could form a formidable partnership at the back with Jacquet in the future.
