Liverpool face contract headache over Ibrahima Konate as Arne Slot provides latest update

Liverpool’s defensive future remains uncertain as Ibrahima Konate’s contract talks have stalled, leaving the France centre-back’s future at Anfield in serious doubt.

Negotiations between the player and the club have dragged on for months, and no agreement has been reached despite extended discussions.

Konate rejects Liverpool contract extension

Sources say the 26-year-old rejected Liverpool’s latest offer and remains far apart from the club on new terms, increasing the risk he could leave on a free transfer this summer when his contract ends.

Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, has been a regular starter and has helped the club win major honours, including the 2025 Premier League title.

But talks over a contract extension have been ongoing since late 2024, with the defender reportedly believing his performances merit a place among the highest-paid defenders in the Premier League.

Liverpool, however, believe their current offer reflects the market value of top centre-backs in Europe.

The stalemate leaves sporting director Richard Hughes facing a difficult choice. Liverpool value Konate at around £50m, but if no deal is reached, the club risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires in June.

Interest from other clubs, including the likes of PSG and Bayern Munich, has been reported, although no firm moves have emerged so far.

The matter takes on added focus as Liverpool prepare for a Champions League clash with Marseille on Wednesday, January 21.

Slot provides update

Manager Arne Slot provided an update on Konate ahead of the match, confirming that the defender did not travel with the squad due to family reasons.

“Ibou did not travel with us because of family matters and I will leave it at that,” Slot told reporters.

“I will speak to him again tomorrow [Wednesday], but he did not travel with us. I will leave it at that.”

With Konate not in the travelling party, Liverpool will likely turn to Joe Gomez to partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence, a rare start for the Englishman this season.

The absence is a concern for Slot, who must manage his squad carefully as the Reds seek to secure progression from the UCL league stage.

Konate’s form this season has been mixed, but he remains one of Liverpool’s most-used defenders, starting most matches when fit.

As the season progresses, Liverpool will hope to find clarity on Konate’s future.
