Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed the signing of Portuguese defender Costinha from Olympiacos on a five-year contract.
The Premier League club are understood to have paid around £11 million for the 26-year-old right-back, who becomes the latest addition to Fabian Hurzeler’s squad ahead of the new season.
Costinha arrives at the Amex Stadium after spending the past two years with Greek giants Olympiacos, where he established himself as a key player and helped the club compete both domestically and in European competitions.
The defender has built a reputation as an energetic and reliable full-back, capable of contributing at both ends of the pitch.
His performances in Greece attracted interest from several clubs, but Brighton have moved quickly to secure his signature.
Fabian Hurzeler pleased with new arrival
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler expressed his delight at completing the deal and revealed that the club had been monitoring the player for some time.
“Costinha is a player we have followed closely for some time,” Hurzeler said.
“He has the defensive capabilities, intensity and understanding of what we value. He is also comfortable in and out of possession and will add competition at right-back.”
The signing continues Brighton’s strategy of identifying talented players from across Europe and developing them within the club’s system.
Costinha is expected to compete for a place in the starting lineup and provide additional depth in a position that Brighton have been looking to strengthen this summer.

Journey from Portugal to the Premier League
Costinha began his career in several youth academies before joining Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2017.
He went on to make 121 first-team appearances for the club, gaining valuable experience in Portugal’s top flight.
His consistent displays earned him a move to Olympiacos, where he continued his development and became an important figure for the Greek club.
During his time in Greece, Costinha made 74 appearances and established him as one of the most effective full-backs in the league.
Although he has yet to make his senior debut for Portugal, Costinha represented the country’s Under-21 side in 2022, earning one international cap.
The move to Brighton now presents him with the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League for the first time.
