Real Madrid have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Manchester City.
The 31-year-old has signed a two-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu, becoming one of the latest additions to Jose Mourinho‘s squad as the returning manager continues to reshape the Spanish giants ahead of the new season.
Silva leaves Manchester City after a hugely successful nine-year spell in England, during which he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent and versatile midfielders.
The Portugal international made 460 appearances for City, scoring 76 goals and providing 77 assists while helping the club win numerous domestic and European honours.
His departure marks the end of an era at the Etihad Stadium. Silva was a key figure under Pep Guardiola and played an important role in City’s dominance of English football, including their historic treble-winning campaign in 2022/23.
Mourinho gets his man
Reports suggest Mourinho played a major role in convincing Silva to move to Madrid.
The Portuguese manager, who recently returned for a second spell at the club, identified his compatriot as a priority target as he looks to restore Real Madrid to the top of European football.
Several clubs were reportedly interested in signing Silva, including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus.
However, Real Madrid moved quickly to secure an agreement, with Mourinho’s influence believed to be a decisive factor in the midfielder’s decision.
His ability to play in multiple positions and his vast experience at the highest level are expected to make him a valuable asset despite entering the latter stages of his career.

Madrid’s summer overhaul continues
The signing is another indication of Real Madrid’s ambitious summer plans under Mourinho.
The club have already strengthened several areas of the squad and continue to pursue further additions as they aim to challenge for major honours next season.
After finishing a second consecutive season without a major trophy, Madrid are determined to return to winning ways.
The arrivals of players such as Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva underline that intent, with Mourinho now assembling a squad built around experience, quality and tactical flexibility.
