Manchester City stars could be unsettled by off-field uncertainty ahead of January transfer window

Manchester City’s ongoing off-field uncertainty could have an impact on some of their players as they attempt to maintain their form on the pitch.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has already admitted that some of his Manchester City players are worried about what the future could hold, with the club still waiting for a resolution to its Premier League case.

Former England international striker Emile Heskey believes the uncertainty could give Manchester City’s opponents an opportunity to put additional pressure on the players.

Man City players could be affected by uncertainty

Heskey believes it is natural for players to become distracted when their club is facing an uncertain future.

Speaking exclusively to 10bet, Heskey said, “If your club is going through something like that, you’re naturally keeping an eye on the news and worrying about the outcome.

“Opponents will see it as a chance to put them under extra pressure on the pitch while they’re unsettled off it. It definitely plays on players’ minds.”

Manchester City have continued to compete at the highest level despite the situation surrounding the club.

However, the longer the uncertainty continues, the more difficult it could become for players to completely ignore what is happening away from football.

That could be particularly important during matches against Man City’s biggest Premier League rivals, who will know that the situation could create an additional weakness.

January could increase the pressure

The uncertainty could also have an impact when the January transfer window opens, with rival clubs potentially looking to take advantage of any players who are considering their futures.

Heskey believes clubs will already be monitoring the situation closely.

“Clubs will be testing the waters to see who might be open to a move in January. Players like Antoine Semenyo, who had plenty of interest before joining, or someone like Marc Guéhi who wants to ensure he keeps his England starter status. Rivals will definitely be asking the question.”

The possibility of losing important players would create another challenge for Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca during the second half of the season.

For players such as Semenyo and Guéhi, their individual ambitions could also play a role if uncertainty around the club continues.

Man City need a resolution

Ultimately, Heskey believes the biggest problem is not knowing what punishment, if any, Manchester City could face.

“Until a punishment is decided, the unknown is the thing that will keep the players awake at night. For everyone involved; the City players and fans, Premier League rivals, Premier League fans, we need a resolution as quickly as possible.”

For Maresca, keeping his squad focused will be crucial as City attempt to compete for silverware.

The longer the situation remains unresolved, however, the greater the possibility that it becomes a distraction both on and off the pitch.

With the January transfer window approaching, Manchester City could therefore face an important period that goes beyond their results.
