Former Everton, Liverpool and West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison believes Sheffield United can challenge for promotion next season, but says Chris Wilder faces a huge rebuilding task this summer if the club are to return to the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to BestBettingSites, Hutchison backed Wilder to guide the Blades back into contention, while also urging the club to consider keeping Kalvin Phillips following the end of his loan spell from Manchester City.
After an inconsistent campaign that saw Sheffield United struggle to build momentum, Wilder now faces a key period as he looks to reshape his squad and restore belief around Bramall Lane.
Promotion hopes remain alive under Wilder
Hutchison remains confident that the manager is capable of leading another successful promotion charge.
“I think there’s no reason why not. Under Chris Wilder, they could,” he said when asked whether Sheffield United can push for promotion next season.
Wilder previously led Sheffield United to the Premier League and earned praise for creating a hard-working, organised side that exceeded expectations.
Hutchison backs Phillips stay
Hutchison believes the foundations are there for a similar rebuild if the right decisions are made over the summer.
One decision he feels should be considered carefully is the future of Phillips.
The former Leeds United midfielder has endured difficult spells in recent years and struggled to rediscover his best form after leaving Elland Road. However, Hutchison believes Sheffield United could provide the right environment for him.
“I would [keep Phillips at Sheffield]. I think Chris Wilder can get the best out of him,” Hutchison said.
“I think he’s one of these players where he suits Sheffield United. I think he suits the city, and suits the work ethic of what Sheffield United fans want and expect from a player.
“So yeah, he’s a player that can roll his sleeves up, and I think he’ll do well for them.”

A big summer lies ahead
Hutchison also praised Wilder for taking a risk with Patrick Bamford after the pair’s previous history, describing the move as a brave decision.
“It was a brave signing, wasn’t it? Not many players have sort of done that,” he explained.
However, he believes the bigger challenge now lies ahead.
“So the job that he’s got in the summer, again, is clearing deadwood. It’s making Sheffield United hungry again, like that first spell when he brought them up and had them playing some super football.
“I think it’s a big summer for Sheffield United and Chris Wilder. I think he’ll turn it around and do much better next season.”
