Arsenal news: Gunners set to lose out on Bruno Guimarães as attention shifts to Martín Zubimendi
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal looks set to finish as Premier League runners-up for the third season in a row, as the North Londoners currently sit 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
To bolster their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season, the Gunners have identified several key targets that would enable them to go that extra step next season.
Despite the majority of their attention focused on the striker department, additions to the midfield have not been overlooked.
As Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães has sparked Arsenal’s interest, Transfer News Blitz writer Joe Matthews has the latest update on any potential move.
Arsenal agree deal in principle
Football Insider initially reported that Arsenal had established a deal in principle for the Magpies captain, but it has now become apparent that it may fall through.
With Newcastle currently sitting just two points off guaranteed Champions League football, the club is looking to build on the progress of recent years.
Newcastle United Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has reportedly told the club’s hierarchy to resist pressure from big clubs trying to procure their best assets.
This includes striker Alexander Isak, as well as the Brazilian midfielder, of whom Arsenal have been admirers since his days at Lyon in Ligue 1.
Martín Zubimendi complications
Another complication in the matter is Arsenal’s interest in Martín Zubimendi, who has a €60million release clause in his contract at Real Sociedad.
Arteta has reportedly been working on a deal for the Spaniard since January.
Nevertheless, recent reports from David Ornstein suggest that the Gunners are inching ever closer to ironing out the final few details for the 26-year-old.
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke has suggested that the club will not move for both players in the summer, and should they fail to acquire Guimarães, Zubimendi will come in as a substitute of sorts instead.
Newcastle United loyalty
Guimarães has extra motivation to stay on the Toon in light of their recent victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies look like they are set for a continuing, steady upward trajectory under the stewardship of Eddie Howe.
It also looks very likely that the Premier League will be awarded an extra Champions League spot, which means that as many as 11 English teams could compete in Europe next season.
Regardless, Newcastle now have confirmed entry in the Conference League at the very least, but should they continue their good form, it is very possible they could overtake a struggling Chelsea side who currently occupy fourth place.
That would allow both Guimarães and Isak to compete at the elite level of European football, which they undoubtedly deserve.
