Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk has ‘no idea’ about his Anfield future after Champions League failure

Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk offered a blunt response to questions surrounding his future at the club.

Arne Slot’s side were dumped out of Europe by French giants Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday after Ousmane Dembélé’s early goal took the tie to extra time, then penalties.

Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missed their penalties for the Reds as they exited the Champions League.

With the Carabao Cup final coming up and the Merseysiders perched top of the Premier League, Liverpool still have a lot to play for this season, in what could be a farewell campaign for some key players.

Virgil van Dijk unsure over his Liverpool future

Alongside van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah’s deals both expire in the summer, with time running out for the trio to sign a new deal with the Merseyside club.

Speaking after Liverpool crashed out of Europe, the Dutchman was in no mood to offer any assurances over his future.

“I still have no idea at the moment, genuinely,” van Dijk said of whether he would be a Liverpool player next season.

“At the moment, I don't even know what will happen next year.

“If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.

“Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes, but that is about it.

“It is not on hold, nothing [is] on hold.

“Listen, there are 10 games to go, and that is my full focus.

“If there is news, you guys will know it. I don't even know myself.”

Legacy at Anfield

The 33-year-old joined the club back in 2018 during the January transfer window for a reported fee of £75million.

Since then, he has gone on to win the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup twice.

The central defender notably remained undefeated at Anfield in the Premier League during his first four years with Liverpool.

In 70 games in which he started for the Reds at home, the team had won 59 of them and drew the other 11 games.

It was Leeds United who dented his perfect record with a last-minute Crysencio Summerville winner.

Focus for van Dijk and Liverpool turns to a cup final at Wembley this Sunday as they prepare to take on Newcastle United in the EFL Cup.
