Man Utd news: Aaron Ramsdale linked to replace André Onana at Old Trafford

Manchester United currently sit 17 points behind their cross-city rivals in the last Champions League spot, as they look set for a first bottom-half finish in the club’s Premier League history.

Whilst there is not one singular reason for this disaster, one that has been highlighted by many across world football is United’s problem in between the sticks.

Ruben Amorim will likely look to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, as reports suggest that Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale could be in line for a shock move to Old Trafford.

With André Onana struggling since his first day in Manchester, and Altay Bayındır failing to step up in his absence, Transfer News Blitz’s Joe Matthews assesses whether the former Arsenal shot stopper is the right man for the job.

Why Aaron Ramsdale?

Ramsdale joined Southampton at the start of the season, and despite making 26 appearances for the club this term, he’s been unable to avoid his fourth career relegation.

In that time, however, the 26-year-old has proved to be a starkly different goalkeeper to Onana.

The Englishman, who was part of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, has made 105 saves so far this season, putting him in the top 5%, as well as making no errors that have led to a goal this season.

On the contrary, Onana has made eight errors leading to goals in all competitions, including two against Lyon in the Europa League, which cost United a vital result in the knockout rounds.

Ultimately, Ramsdale has 176 Premier League appearances to his name and has shown this season that he is ready for redemption at the same level, as he was dropped by Mikel Arteta at Arsenal back in 2023.

Do Manchester United need a new goalkeeper?

Speaking on TalkSport, Scottish former-footballer, and now TV pundit Ally McCoist said: “I don’t think it’d be daft at all. I don’t fancy Onana to be honest with you, I’m not sure he’s of the class Manchester United need as a goalkeeper moving forward.

“The squad’s needing a dramatic overhaul, and that wouldn’t be the daftest move.”

With Ramsdale known to have a desire to be play in the Premier League again next season, Manchester United would be a logical move, but should he decide to go elsewhere, the Red Devils have also been linked to Senne Lammens, Lucas Chevalier, and James Trafford among others.

With that in mind, it seems blatantly obvious that Amorim and the rest of Man United are sick of having to put up with the seemingly endless mistakes coming from their goalkeeper, with the Cameroonian set and ready to leave in the summer.
