Morgan Rogers has revealed that Xabi Alonso played a major role in convincing him to join Chelsea, while close friend Cole Palmer has shared his delight after the club confirmed the blockbuster transfer.
Chelsea officially announced the signing of the England international on Tuesday, July 21, ending weeks of speculation over his future after agreeing a British record deal with Aston Villa.
Rogers admitted that speaking with Alonso helped make his decision, with the Spaniard’s football philosophy matching exactly what he was looking for in the next stage of his career.
Alonso played key role
“I’ve had a few conversations with him and I think it’s important for me to be here that I need to understand what the manager’s like, how he is and how he wants to operate,” said Rogers in an interview with Chelsea.
“It very much fits with the way I see the game, the way I want to play, and the way I want to be me, and be free and express myself. Him being a part of that was a massive factor in me being here.”
Alonso arrived at Stamford Bridge earlier at the start of July, with Rogers now expected to become another key part of the Spaniard’s new-look squad as the Blues prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.

Rogers excited to reunite with Palmer
The move will also see Rogers reunited with Palmer, with the pair having known each other since their time in England’s youth setup before progressing together at Manchester City.
The 24-year-old admitted they have been talking about playing together again for some time and revealed Palmer has struggled to hide his excitement.
“I’ve known Cole since I was about 14, first in the England [youth] teams and then when we were both at Man City together. We’ve been speaking about this for a while; we always would love to have played together. So, for it to happen, we’re both excited.
“He’s non-stop ringing my phone, texting me, and I can’t wait. I think that’s probably the most special thing, playing with one of your best friends and being around him every day. It’s something I’m really excited about.”
Rogers added: “He’s so happy, he’s never text[ed] me so much in his life. It’s probably the most special thing to play with one of your best friends.”
Palmer also broke his silence following Chelsea’s announcement, posting a simple message on Instagram that reflected their close friendship; “Playing for Chelsea FC with one of your best friends in life >>>”
Chelsea supporters will now hope the pair’s strong connection off the pitch can translate into a formidable partnership on it as Alonso’s side looks to challenge for silverware this season.
