Enzo Fernandez transfer news: Man City remain interested despite missing deadline

Manchester City remain interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez despite missing the deadline to make an offer for the Argentina international.

Chelsea had set City a 5pm deadline on Friday, August 14, to make a bid for Fernandez, who the Blues value at £120 million.

However, no offer was made before the deadline passed, with Fernandez now expected to remain at Chelsea for the 2026/27 season.

Despite this, Manchester City have not completely ended their interest in the midfielder and could still make a move before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Man City continue to monitor Fernandez

City’s interest in Fernandez has grown following Rodri’s move to Barcelona, with the club looking for midfield reinforcements.

Fernandez also has a connection with new Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca, who worked with the midfielder during his time as Chelsea manager.

Maresca is understood to be a big admirer of Fernandez and could be interested in bringing him to the Etihad Stadium.

However, Chelsea’s £120 million valuation has proven to be a major stumbling block.

The Blues were reportedly clear that they wanted the full asking price to be met by the deadline if City were to sign Fernandez this summer.

With City failing to make an offer, Chelsea are now expected to keep the midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez future at Chelsea remains uncertain

Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a British-record transfer fee of around £106.8 million following his impressive performances for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.

The midfielder has since become an important player for the club and has helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.

However, his future has been questioned throughout the summer transfer window, with Manchester City and previously Real Madrid linked with a move.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Chelsea have made it clear that they will not allow the midfielder to leave for less than their £120 million valuation.

With Manchester City still interested, the situation could remain one to watch until the end of the transfer window.

For now, Fernandez remains a Chelsea player, but City’s continued interest means his future at Stamford Bridge may not be completely settled.
