Anthony Gordon transfer news: England forward finishes medical as Barcelona reach agreement with Newcastle

Newcastle's Anthony Gordon to Barcelona

According to reports, on Wednesday, May 27, Barcelona made an offer to Newcastle to sign forward Anthony Gordon, who completed his Barcelona medical on Thursday and will sign a five-year contract.

Barcelona close in on Gordon deal

Newcastle and Barcelona have reportedly agreed a fee of £69.3m (€80m) including add-ons.

The deal is expected to be completed before Gordon joins England’s pre-World Cup training camp in Florida.

The Catalan club are expected to make the announcement as early as Friday, May 29, to kick off the summer transfer window faster and louder than any other European club.

Should the transfer happen, it will be Newcastle’s second-most expensive sale in transfer history, following Alexander Isak’s £125m move to Liverpool.

Gordon finished the 2025/26 season as Newcastle’s top goalscorer with 17 goals.

However, he did not feature in the club’s last four fixtures despite being on the bench as a way to protect him ahead of an expected summer move.

The England international still has four years left on his Newcastle contract after he signed a contract extension back in October 2024.

Bayern Munich lose race for England star

Earlier this month, Bayern Munich were reportedly keeping an eye on Gordon, especially after earlier in the year, Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson had told reporters that the club may have to sell to buy big this summer.

However, the German giants left the race to Barcelona.

Many have questioned the move, pointing out that it once took much more for players to earn transfers to clubs as big as Barcelona.

However, there is no denying that Gordon is one of the most exciting young talents in Europe at the moment, and that he has enjoyed a strong campaign during what has otherwise been a turbulent season for Newcastle.

Champions League form catches attention

“What’s interesting is the two clubs who were fighting for his signature are from the continent – Barcelona and Bayern Munich – and I think a lot of that would be down to what he’s done in the Champions League this season,” said Sky Sports News’ Keith Downie.

“Only Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane scored more goals than Gordon’s 10. It’s a brilliant return. In that competition, his numbers have been sensational. His numbers haven’t been quite as good in the Premier League.

“Yes, he scored six, taking his total to 17 which, on paper, looks good. But clearly his best form this season has been reserved for the Champions League.”

Gordon is also flexible, playing primarily on the left wing, “but he’s also been used a lot through the middle, to devastating effect at times,” added Downie.

“Barcelona have got an abundance of riches, with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. Robert Lewandowski is leaving, so perhaps that provides an opening for him through the middle. That ability to play in a number of positions is the thing that has attracted Barcelona.

“He’s got blistering pace, he scores all sorts of goals and he’s improved greatly as a Newcastle player since arriving from Everton. He’s 25, he’s an England international and I can see him fitting into the lifestyle over there, the style of football.

“Newcastle fans will be disappointed they are losing one of their star players, however I think it’s easier to take losing him to Barcelona than it would have been if they were to have lost him to Arsenal, who were interested, and Liverpool, who almost signed him two years ago.”
