Transfer news: Raheem Sterling joins Feyenoord as a free agent after Chelsea exit

Raheem Sterling joins Feyenoord

Raheem Sterling has joined Dutch club Feyenoord until the end of the season after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent in January, bringing his difficult spell at Stamford Bridge to an end.

Raheem Sterling has joined Dutch club Feyenoord until the end of the season after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent in January, bringing his difficult spell at Stamford Bridge to an end.

The 31-year-old became a free agent in January despite having 18 months left on his contract, with both parties agreeing that it was time to part ways.

Sterling had been made available for transfer last summer by former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, but ultimately remained at the club, where he struggled for opportunities.

Now, the former Manchester City winger has opted for a new challenge abroad in the Eredivisie, joining Feyenoord as they push for a strong finish to their campaign.

They currently sit second in the table and are managed by former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, whose presence is understood to have played a key role in Sterling’s decision, writes Transfer News Blitz‘s Liberty Nicholson-Hulse.

Sterling’s struggles after Man City success

After arriving with high expectations following a successful period at Manchester City, Sterling’s time at Chelsea was disrupted by inconsistency and several managerial changes.

Following the arrival of Maresca, Sterling found himself left out of the team’s plans, and a loan switch to Arsenal was explored.

However, the move proved underwhelming and failed to reignite his form.

With a limited role awaiting him at Chelsea, the England international opted to draw a line under his time in the Premier League.

Former Premier League star ready for fresh start

Feyenoord see Sterling’s arrival as a statement signing, as they continue to impress domestically.

Bringing in a player with Sterling’s Premier League pedigree and significant Champions League experience represents some strong business for the club.

Speaking about the move, Sterling has said that he felt the timing was right to “control the next step” of his career as a free agent, allowing him to carefully consider his options and speak in detail with clubs and managers before making any decisions.

He is confident that he will be a valuable member of Van Persie’s side and wants to make an impact on the pitch and as a leader in the dressing room.

For Feyenoord, the deal represents a valuable addition as they aim to maintain pressure at the top of the table.

For Sterling, it is a fresh start and a chance to reassert his influence at the highest level as he looks to finish the season strongly.
