Chelsea have released a strongly worded statement explaining the circumstances behind Enzo Maresca’s departure after Manchester City officially confirmed him as Pep Guardiola’s successor.
The Italian has signed a three-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, with Man City paying Chelsea compensation to secure his services after his controversial mid-season exit from Stamford Bridge.
However, Chelsea have now broken their silence, claiming Maresca’s desire to manage Manchester City played a major role in disrupting their 2025/26 campaign.
Chelsea explain Maresca departure
In a statement published on the club’s official website, Chelsea revealed that Maresca informed them in autumn of 2025 that he wanted to replace Guardiola whenever the opportunity arose.
The Blues claimed it became clear that their former head coach was “fully committed” to pursuing the role despite being under a long-term contract.
Chelsea also said they felt “let down” when Maresca unexpectedly resigned on January 1, insisting his “head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity.”
The club added that it had little choice but to accept his resignation to protect the players, supporters and the club itself after he decided not to continue in the role for the remainder of the season.
Chelsea confirmed that confidential settlement agreements had been reached with both Manchester City and Maresca, with both parties paying compensation.

Following his appointment, Maresca acknowledged the disruption caused by his departure and apologised to Chelsea.
“The decision was only mine,” he said.
“My resignation from Chelsea opened a path for me to join Manchester City, which is a club I knew very well.
“I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish.”
The 46-year-old also thanked Chelsea’s owners, staff and supporters for their backing during his spell at Stamford Bridge, saying he would always treasure the success they achieved together.
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak welcomed Maresca back to the club, describing him as one of Europe’s outstanding young coaches, while the Italian said he was “ecstatic” to return and was looking forward to building on Guardiola’s legacy.
