Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement with Crystal Palace to sign defender Maxence Lacroix in a deal worth £52m.
The Blues have been in talks with Palace for several weeks over the French centre-back, with negotiations now understood to have reached a successful conclusion.
The transfer is expected to be completed once the remaining formalities, including a medical, are finalised.
Lacroix has emerged as one of Chelsea’s top defensive targets after impressing during his time at Selhurst Park.
The 26-year-old joined Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 and quickly established himself as one of Oliver Glasner’s most important players, helping the Eagles enjoy one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Why Chelsea want Lacroix
Chelsea’s interest is based on more than just Lacroix’s Premier League experience.
The French international is regarded as one of the quickest central defenders in England, with his recovery pace allowing Palace to play a high defensive line.
He is also comfortable defending one-on-one situations and has developed into a vocal leader under Glasner.
His ability to defend large spaces, recover possession and carry the ball out from the back is believed to have made him an ideal fit for Xabi Alonso‘s style of play at Stamford Bridge.
Lacroix’s athleticism has also stood out statistically, with the defender ranking among the Premier League’s fastest players while consistently winning defensive duels against opposition forwards.

Another major signing for Chelsea
Chelsea have been active throughout the summer transfer window as Alonso continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.
Morgan Rogers has already joined for a British record fee of £117m, while Marco Palestra joined for £43m.
The arrival of Lacroix would further strengthen a defence that has dealt with injuries and inconsistency in recent campaigns.
His experience in both the Bundesliga and Premier League, coupled with his leadership qualities, is expected to add greater stability to Chelsea’s back line.
Palace had initially been seeking a higher fee, with reports suggesting they valued Lacroix at around £60m.
However, Chelsea have now reportedly agreed a deal worth £52m, bringing the transfer a step closer to completion.
Should the move go through as expected, Lacroix will become one of Chelsea’s biggest signings of the summer as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
He will also be Chelsea’s first signing that is 26 years old or older since the summer of 2022, as Chelsea continue to adjust their recruitment strategy this summer.
