Man Utd analysis: Ruben Amorim faces financial issues regarding Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho
Manchester United forwards Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are currently on loan at other Premier League sides, but they could end up costing the club millions.
Rashford left the Red Devils to join Aston Villa until the end of the season, following continued poor form with the Manchester club.
The Villans have a £40million buy-option clause for the Englishman, whilst covering 75% of his wages.
Sancho joined Chelsea on loan in August after returning from a spell with Dortmund last season.
English duo drive up the bill
The Blues agreed to an obligation to buy clause worth around £20million, plus £5million in performance-related add-ons.
However, the Daily Mail claims both players could end up heavily impacting Man United’s finances after the end of the season.
According to the online publication, no club is willing to match Rashford’s huge £315,000 per week wages.
Therefore, the club would have to give the 27-year-old a pay-off to cover the drop in wages if he were to depart for another club in the summer.
The total cost would reportedly amount to £20million, half of what they would earn if Villa exercised the buy-out clause.
With regards to Sancho, despite there being an existing mandatory buy-out clause, the report suggests that Chelsea also has an alternative option if they do not wish to sign the 24-year-old.
Enzo Maresca’s side can exercise a financial penalty fee, which is unknown, if they do not wish to keep Sancho at the club.
To add to United’s woes, there is no indication that winger wishes to commit his future to the London club, which could force Ruben Amorim to try and offload the £73million player this summer.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe slams ‘overpaid and not good enough’ players
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave his view on several of the Red Devils’ loaned-out players at the club, including Sancho, in a recent interview.
When asked about the criticism from fans, including the protests before their match against Arsenal, the Ineos owner pointed towards the money the club have spent on players, such as the former Manchester City academy player, as to why they are in a state of turmoil.
“I'll give you an example. If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn't buy, we are buying Antony, we are buying Casemiro, we are buying Andre Onana, we are buying Rasmus Hojlund, we are buying Jadon Sancho,” he said.
“These are all things from the past, but whether we like it or not, we have inherited those things, and we have to sort it out.
“For Sancho, who obviously now plays for Chelsea, and we pay half his wages, we are paying £17m to buy him in the summer.
“So it takes time for us to move away from the past into a new place in the future.”
Financial concerns
Ratcliffe soon after announced plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium next to Old Trafford, whilst making improbvements to the surrounding area.
The project, set to cost around £2billion, is a part of a government-funded regeneration project in south Manchester.
Yet, the Manchester United Supporters Trust recently questioned whether the plans to build a new ground would “add to the debt burden which has held back the club for the last two decades.”
To add to their concerns, the British billionaire also confessed that the club had run out of money as a consequence of overspending in the last three years.
So, what position will Amorim and United be in when they try to rebuild the squad this summer?
My guess is that they are going to be screwed.
