MLS news: San Diego FC close to reaching agreement with Man City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne
Manchester City fell to their second defeat in their last three Premier League matches, after table toppers Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola’s side now sit fourth in the table, with Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth, Chelsea and Aston Villa all within two points of the reigning champions.
Despite being an unused substitute in City’s previous two games, Kevin De Bruyne started against Arne Slot’s Liverpool, however, was replaced by James McAtee after 66 minutes.
Rumours are beginning to swirl about the Belgian’s future in Manchester, with TBR Football reporting that Major League Soccer newcomers San Diego FC are close to reaching an agreement with the 33-year-old.
Who are San Diego FC?
San Diego FC are the MLS’ newest expansion team and made history on Sunday with a 2-0 victory in their inaugural competitive game over reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy.
The West Coast outfit have already attracted some big names, including former Napoli and PSV winger Hirving Lozano, Championship veteran Paddy McNair and Danish forward Anders Dreyer.
Following in Lionel Messi’s footsteps
Since signing for David Beckham’s Inter Miami CF, Lionel Messi has skyrocketed the global interest in Major League Soccer.
In recent seasons some of Europe’s biggest names have followed the Argentine to the MLS, with Marco Reus and Luis Suárez both prime examples.
It is not just players reaching the end of their careers making the move across the pond though.
Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, who had scored 11 Championship goals this season, left the English second-tier for Atlanta United in January for £22.5million.
It would be no surprise to see De Bruyne make the move, with the bookies offering great odds on the move happening.
KDB having a tough season
It is no secret that Man City are having an underwhelming campaign, with many of their usual stars underperforming.
Belgium international De Bruyne is one of those players and has struggled to hit a consistent green patch after struggling with a hamstring injury.
The midfielder is maybe a victim of his own success, with a tally of three goals and six assists in all competitions considered to be lacklustre.
De Bruyne’s current Manchester City deal runs out in June and with a new contract seemingly not yet on the table, there is every chance a move to California could be on the cards for the Belgian.
