Real Madrid news: Carlo Ancelotti expected to depart as Los Blancos target Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid have been in a state of shock after Arsenal eliminated the Spanish giants from the Champions League in midweek.

It was the first time in 21 years that Real had lost a quarter-final tie in the competition.

The result has sent shockwaves across Europe, with head coach Carlo Ancelotti now anticipated to leave his post at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Carlo Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid

Madrid take on Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on April 26, and as reported by the Athletic, will commence talks with Ancelotti regarding his future following the match.

It is unknown whether the 65-year-old will still be at the helm of the reigning Spanish champions for the newly expanded Club World Cup, which is set to commence on June 14.

According to David Ornstein, the Italian’s preference is to take over the Brazil national team once he leaves Real.

The Brazilian Football Confederation are believed to be in advanced talks with Ancelotti after sacking Dorival Júnior in March.

Real Madrid target Xabi Alonso

Looking ahead to the future, Real Madrid have made Xabi Alonso their number one target to succeed Ancelotti.

The Spaniard is currently in charge of Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, who are hopeful that Alonso will opt to stay in Germany.

Of course, the 43-year-old shares a rich history with Los Blancos, making 236 appearances for the club as a player.

Real have reportedly already held talks with Alonso’s agent, Iñkai Ibáñez, over the last two weeks, as reported by Florian Plettenberg.

There has been no official contact between Madrid and Leverkusen yet, however, the German side would reportedly demand €15-20million for Alonso’s services.

It is no surprise to see Real Madrid headhunt one of Europe’s top young coaches, and there is every possibility Alonso will return to the Santiago Bernabéu next season.
