Chelsea have held positive talks with Brighton over a surprise move for striker Danny Welbeck as Xabi Alonso continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
According to reports, Chelsea have registered their interest in the 35-year-old after he enjoyed the most prolific league campaign of his career last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals for Brighton.
Initial discussions between the two clubs are understood to have gone well, with Brighton willing to listen to offers if they receive what they consider to be a fair fee.
Welbeck has just one year remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium after triggering a one-year extension earlier this year, leaving Brighton with a decision to make over the experienced forward’s future.
Chelsea targeting more experience
The interest in Welbeck represents a shift in Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, with the club typically focusing on signing younger players with long-term potential.
Since taking charge, Alonso has made no secret of his desire to add more experience to his squad.
Chelsea previously explored a move for Granit Xhaka before the deal failed to materialise, and Welbeck is now being viewed as another player capable of bringing leadership alongside quality on the pitch.
The former Manchester United and Arsenal striker has enjoyed a resurgence at Brighton in recent seasons, becoming the club’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer while remaining an important figure under Fabian Hurzeler.
His experience of more than 400 Premier League appearances is also seen as a valuable asset for Chelsea’s young dressing room.

Brighton prepared to listen
While Brighton are reluctant to lose one of their senior players, reports suggest they will not stand in Welbeck’s way if Chelsea meet their valuation.

Further departures are also expected as Alonso looks to balance his squad for the 2026/27 campaign.
