Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk says ‘progress’ made over new contract at Anfield
Liverpool were handed their first Premier League away defeat of the season at the weekend, as Fulham bested the Reds 3-2 at Craven Cottage.
Marco Silva’s side were flying, with Ryan Sessegnon, Alex Iwobi and Rodrigo Muniz amongst the goals for the Cottagers.
Despite the unexpected result, it was Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk who dominated headlines after the full-time whistle.
Virgil van Dijk set to stay at Liverpool?
With 11 points between Arne Slot’s side and second-placed Arsenal, the Reds remain firmly on course to become Premier League champions.
However, during Liverpool's title conquest, the futures of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk have been hanging over Merseyside.
Alexander-Arnold seemingly has one foot in a plane to Madrid, whereas Salah has remained coy about a possible contract extension.
On the other hand, speaking after the Reds’ defeat at the weekend, van Dijk delivered a glimmer of hope for the Merseyside faithful.
“There is progress, yeah”, the centre-back said.
“These are external discussions, and we’ll see.
“I love the club, I love the fans, and they were there for us again [at Fulham].”
The Dutch international admitted he had ‘no idea’ regarding his future following Liverpool’s Champions League exit in March, so supporters will be delighted that progress has been made.
Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are reportedly interested in the central defender, with a move to the MLS or Saudi Pro League also said to be a possibility.
