Arsenal news: Viktor Gyökeres among Andrea Berta’s top summer transfer targets

Arsenal are ready to enter a new era at the Emirates Stadium after appointing Andrea Berta as the club’s new Sporting Director.

Already busy at work ahead of the summer transfer window, the Italian is reportedly a ‘firm admirer’ of Sporting centre-forward Viktor Gyökeres, as per The Athletic.

The 26-year-old has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, including fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United.

What would Viktor Gyökeres bring to Arsenal?

The Gunners have been in dire need of a striker for some time – a problem which has been amplified following long-term injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Many Arsenal supporters were left frustrated by the club’s lack of January investment in the position, which has forced midfielder Mikel Merino to play as a makeshift centre-forward.

The North Londoners’ lack of an out-and-out goal scorer has arguably held them back from winning the Premier League, with Mikel Arteta’s men looking set to finish as runners-up for the third consecutive year.

With 42 goals and 11 assists in 42 appearances this season, Gyökeres could be the answer to all of Arsenal’s prayers.

How much would Viktor Gyökeres cost?

The Swedish international is seen as a more realistic option than Alexander Isak, who is reportedly set to cost upwards of £150million.

On the other hand, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Gyökeres has a verbal agreement with Sporting to leave the club in the summer for between £60-70million – an absolute steal.

If Arsenal can strike a deal with the Portuguese club for that price, it would allow Arteta to invest in other areas of his squad, something the Spaniard is seemingly keen to do.

With the likes of Thomas Partey and Jorginho set to leave the club, a midfield overhaul is on the cards at the Emirates Stadium, whilst a winger and backup goalkeeper are also on the Gunners’ shopping list.
